Support » Plugin: UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin » Better if it backed up WordPress Core files too

  • I’ve used various wordpress backup plugins, and what seems odd about this one is that it doesn’t backup your wordpress core files. Yes of course you can get them elsewhere and install them manually if you have to, but a) that’s a big hassle and b) how are you going to remember exactly which version of wordpress each backup set was using? A database from one version of wordpress isn’t necessarily going to work with a different version of wordpress.
Given this shortcoming, I’m surprised that this is such a popular backup tool.

    Hi,

If you are restoring your site using UpdraftPlus’s restorer, then you must already have installed WordPress and UpdraftPlus.

I can’t find the reference now, but when I began work on UpdraftPlus, the WordPress manual said something like “start with a clean install of WordPress, not a backup, especially if you were hacked”, so UpdraftPlus continued the practice of Updraft and followed that advice. However, for people for whom it’s really important, there is an add-on that provides the feature: https://updraftplus.com/shop/more-files/

It’s recorded in the backup. If you start restoring on a different version, UpdraftPlus will inform you. Though, if you’re not running the latest version of WordPress, almost certainly you should be.

We haven’t ruled out releasing a stand-alone restore wizard in future. Demand isn’t that high.

    David
