 * Hi,
 * This sounds like a cache issue more than anything else, but on what pages are
   the version strings different ?

 * These are 2 local installed sites (XAMPP), different themes, for testing purposes.
   I installed WPb3 from zip-file locally. This surely is no big issue, just curious.
   In the meantime it switched to 38065 / 38069.
    I’d say let’s do st. more useful
   now 🙂

 * It’s all pulled from the same file, so you should get the extended version on
   all pages IF you have upgraded the beta to the nightly.
 * Beta3 is the raw beta three.
 * The 38069 is the nightly version and should change as we push patches between
   each beta releases.

 * Hmm, I don’t understand the update policy, to be honest. I installed 4.6b3 from
   zip-file to 2 local destinations. After that one was showing the version number,
   and one not. Now, without doing anything (no beta testing plugin or so, one shows
   38065, the other 38069. This have been installations overwriting the previous
   beta2. Because these installations are for testing theme-compatibility I wouldn’t
   like to go back and try again, I don’t care that much, it just made me curious
   why this would happen. A look in the code told me to expect the version number
   to be shown, but I’m not so much into it, sorry.

 * Once you’re on Betas, you get updated every 12 hours to whatever available nightly
   there is, as long as it’s different than what you have. You do not need to install
   a beta plugin. WordPress detects “You are on beta” and assumes you want the latest
   releases.
 * They should all be the same, but if one site is on a different 12-hour schedule
   than the other, it may be temporarily out of sync between sites.
 * Seeing different versions on different pages of the same site means either there’s
   a bug OR you have some server side caching gone sticky. Given how the version
   is put into the footer, the odds are caching.

 * Thanks Mika, now I know better. Right now it’s a race between the 2 _separate_
   sites: 38097 vs 38108
 * Last question:
    So when a beta comes out as a zip, it will not have a 5-digit
   version number at first?

 * When a Beta is released it has no 5 digit number. That is ONLY done by the nightlies.

 * Perfect. So now I have my answer and we all know everything runs smoothly and
   shiny 🙂
