    Hi there,

I’m a new user and not a tech expert.

I’ve set up a WordPress page via Amazon Lightsail.

Several places recommend that I use this plugin for backup.

I’ve installed it and all went super smooth. I’ve backed up to my Dropbox, and I see several zip files have been created there.

My question: What is the simplest way to validate these backups? In other words, I want to be sure that they will actually work if/when the time comes that I need to use them. I imagine I could set up another lightsail instance and restore the files there using the paid version of this plugin, but I’m thinking someone might offer advice on a simpler option?

  • Hi,

The backup set consists of a number of .zip and .gz files. These will all be identified by the same timestamp, site name and random character string. The naming scheme is as follows:

    backup_<YEAR>_<MONTH>_<DAY>-<TIME>_<Site Name>_<12 random characters>-<Section of the backup>.[zip/gz]

    e.g.:
    backup_2018-11-19-1839_WordPress_d59089f8ad80-plugins.zip
    backup_2018-11-19-1839_WordPress_d59089f8ad80-themes.zip
    backup_2018-11-19-1839_WordPress_d59089f8ad80-uploads.zip
    backup_2018-11-19-1839_WordPress_d59089f8ad80-db.gz

UpdraftPlus also creates a log file after (un)successful backup process, if it finds error sent or creating a zip file, it will log the errors in backup log file.

You can find the log file in the ‘wp-content/updraft’ directory via FTP or your hosts’ file manager.

Other way you can download the zip/gz file sent to dropbox to your computer and trying unzip the file, If there are no errors which extracting the file, It means the zip file is no corrupt.

    Thanks,
    Harshad

Also, UpdraftClone – https://updraftplus.com/updraftclone/ – is a great way to do an instant test.

Great thank you for the advice!

I can confirm that all zip files have been downloaded, and aren’t corrupt. I’ll also take a look at updraft clone. Thank you for the advice guys.

    You’re welcome 🙂
