Best Way to Advise Users to Install Plugins

What’s the consensus from experienced WP users and developers?:

When it comes to teaching people how to install plugins, what’s the easiest method for average WP users to follow? I realize the FTP is the most “universal” method, but it can be little cumbersome to perform for many users. By contrast, I like the WP ability to upload a .zip file from within the Add New Plugins screen – how long has that feature been around? That would be my pick as the easiest method, but maybe there are other considerations I’m missing. (Even easier: if the plugin is located in the WP Plugin Directory/Repository: searching within the local Plugins page and just clicking “Install”).

    Thanks.
