Best theme to work with?

    I plan on making a website similar to thisiswhyimbroke.com. Since I’m fairly new to developing, I want to use the WordPress framework and these forums to learn how to customize my site.

    The creator of TIWIB uses WordPress, but has his own custom theme. Is it necessary for me to create my own theme, or can I just choose one and hardcode unique features not supplied by the theme developer? Are there any particular themes that are easier to custom than others?

    Hopefully this newbie question makes sense, and appreciate your help! Thanks.
