We’ve not tested all available CAPTCHA solutions for wpDiscuz yet. wpDiscuz has it’s own free built-in CAPTCHA with double protection. And I can say the reCAPTCHA is the best at the moment, but it’s available as and addon on our store, it’s not free.
Also wpDiscuz works fine with Akismet, WordPress Zero Spam and WPBruiser anti-spam plugins.
Regarding ZeroSpam, do you have to do anything to make it work with WpDiscuz, or does it automatically work? I notice the captcha is still visible and ZeroSpam is supposed to be a no captcha style plugin. Should I be disabling the built in wpdiscuz captcha if I want to use ZeroSpam?

wpDiscuz CAPTCHA is a stand-alone component, you can disable it in wpDiscuz Settings > Show/Hide Tab
