Beginner Security plugin help required

Hi guys, I have a few years experience of building wordpress websites and have always used word fence security. I’ve never messed about with any settings but have never had any issues until recently. A previous word fence update stopped the scans working with backup buddy so I had to uninstall it, now yesterday’s wordfence update a lot of my websites won’t work with other plugins, like gallery plugins etc, but when I delete wordfence, the websites work fine again so I have to stop using wordfence and choose another, but here’s my question, I don’t want to have to go into loads of settings as I don’t know what I’m doing, so am looking for a simple security plugin that will do the basics, that’s all I’m looking for, but after looking over the Internet, several so called easy plugins have had lots of users with issues with being locked out as the .htaccess and wp config.php files have been tampered with. Do anyone know of a very basic security plugin that will offer basic security required without having to mess about with loads of settings….. Quick question 2: does wordfence change the .htaccess or wp config.php files? If so, if you uninstall the plugin, do they revert back to the original versions of the files?
