  • Hey everyone!

First post, please be gentle 🙂

I’ve set up my first wordpress site, and of course am now getting tons of spam comments. I looked at to try and get the gist of how to set up the blacklist to save myself some time, but it seems that it’s either being ignored or I’ve missed a step in setting it up, as the spam comments containing the words I’ve filtered are still coming in.

For example, I’ve put ‘lista de email’ (along with a few variants – ‘iista de email’ etc) on my blacklist, and yet I’ve got dozens of comments from them waiting for approval. I assumed they would automatically be removed from my pending list?

Is there an additional step to set up the blacklist apart from entering words and hitting save changes? Is there a “setting up the blacklist” for dummies?

  • Thanks for the reply!

Are you suggesting that I use this 5G blacklist method to prevent spam, or that this is what’s causing my issues with the native WordPress blacklist?

I was hoping to avoid using additional plugins/customizations to prevent spam, hence why I’m initially trying to use the basic stuff within WordPress. Though if the stuff built in to WordPress doesn’t work or isn’t effective, I’ll definitely look at adding this!

I am very new to all of this also, and I just now realize you were asking more about SPAM than about security.

I begin using the Akismet plugin from the very beginning…
…and I have had no trouble at all with SPAM.

You can easily find, install and activate that plugin from your Dashboard, and it takes only a little effort after that (and I voluntarily paid a small sum of money) for getting an Akismet API Key to get things going.
