Support » Everything else WordPress » Before I updatee, does the Media uploader suck worse than last time?

  • I’m honestly afraid to update to the latest version of WordPress, the last update changed the media uploader and now putting an image in a post can take forever and you can’t set a featured image and put an image in a post at once.
It’s the fact that it can take up to 20 or 30 seconds for the image code to appear in the post that is driving me nuts – God Forbid you click anywhere within the post while you’re waiting for that image code to actually appear, because that will change the location of where the image code is places.

Is there anyway to go back to the good media uploader?
And is the update as bad as the last update?

  • Is there anyway to go back to the good media uploader?

Going back will invite huge security risks, apart from other problems.

And is the update as bad as the last update?

No. Every update is an improvement over the previous ones in some aspects.

Back up your site and database completely before you update if you are worried about it. Since it’s a security update, not updating runs a risk of being hacked – which is far worse than media issues.

If you want help sorting out why that’s happening open a new thread. (BTW, you might want to read this first – http://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome#Choose_A_Good_Topic_Title )

I came up with the perfect topic title – you answered didn’t you?

So, media is still super slow, can mess up a post and hasn’t been fixed. Good to know.

You don’t have to use WordPress if you’re not satisfied with it.

Actually, millions of people use WP without any problems with the media uploader, so sounds like your site has a problem.

No, there are plenty of people how have issues with WordPress each time there is an update – actually Millions of people have problems with themes and plugins each time there is an update, making well working sites to break after one click of “Update Now” – that last update was just horrid and broke plenty of sites, some never recovered and several of the updates weren’t necessary and broke plugins that had been following WordPress rules.

Why WordPress feels it must fix what isn’t broken baffles a lot of us.
The Media uploader is a problem with many sites, not just mine. Many people are not satisfied with it – just look at the forum here. Back when the update came out this forum was overwhelmed with complaints about the Media uploader. We just have to live with it, its not like we can change now. It would be nice to have a choice in the matter, keep the old uploader or change to the update that doesn’t work, but we don’t. If we don’t update, like you said, we risk security issues.

There is no choice, WordPress is the only CMS that works most of the time. We just have to live with whatever we’re given even though there are many of us willing to pay for changes to keep old features and suppress much of the ridiculous unnecessary new features.

I love change and new techy stuff, but why not add new features instead of changing features that work well and causing sites to break. It makes no sense.

Right! Remember that time- Wait a minute. That never ever ever happened. Sorry. 😉

As Andrew has indicated if there is something you need help with then we’re game to try and help you. If you just want to complain and vent, well OK. But after a while this thread will get closed. This is a support forum after all.

Why WordPress feels it must fix what isn’t broken baffles a lot of us.

WordPress continues to evolve and most people actually like the media uploader (yes, you don’t, I get that).

    Back to your original question:

Before I updatee, does the Media uploader suck worse than last time?

Nope. The 3.5.2 update is not related to the media uploader.

WordPress 3.5.2 Maintenance and Security Release

If you are really worried about it give the long upgrade doc a read.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended

The short version? Make a full backup and then do the upgrade.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_Up_Your_Database
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

If you don’t like it or your installation goes up in flames then you can put it all back the way it was.

Our advice will always be to upgrade to the latest WordPress version especially for the security issues reported. If there are problems with your installation then more often than not it’s either your theme or a plugin.

So people have problems with themes and plugins every time there is an upgrade?

Why blame WordPress, ever occurred to you that the THEME or the PLUGIN is the problem?
