• Hi,
    I am a home based business (personal retreat/art/coaching). And I am totally re-doing my marketing. I have decided that the best way forward for me is to create a new website (with blog of course) with WordPress.
    What I would like to do is to download the software to my mac (I found a very clear explanation of how to do this – so I’m hoping this step is simple and straight-forward), then I want to do all the design and testing on my Mac. THEN finally transfer (ftp) the finished website to my exiting host.

    The reason I want to do it this way is because I want my existing website to stay online until this new project is finished – which I expect will take me a week or so, and I need to stay with my business url because I have been in business for 11 years and changing it now would be absurd.

    I do know that my host works with WordPress, but from the “how to get started pages” I’ve read its hard for me to understand how and when the database needs to be added to the site and whether I can do that on my mac or whether I have to do that on my hosting cpanel.

    Basically I just want to be assured that my new site won’t go live until I am happy with it.
    Thanks for your time,
    hugs,
    Derby

    When you install locally, that will of course not happen.
    Simply said what you are going to do is:
    – Have an old website that is left untouched;
    – Install WP on your Mac and play with it until you are finished;
    – Delete the old website;
    – Make an export from the new Mac website, copy all the theme files and plugins, etc. (all in the wp-content folder);
    – Make a brandnew installation on the webserver where the old site used to be;
    – Upload the themes, plugins, etc., import the export (which is the content, such as pages, posts, comments, etc.) from the Mac site;
    – That should do the trick.

    Alternally, you can install the new site not on your Mac, but in a new folder on the webserver. Using a ‘maintenance mode’ plugin, an htaccess password or something, you hide the new site from the public eye (but simply not linking to it is a starter for that too). When you’re happy with the new site, you delete the old one and move WP to the new location:

    You will need to install a Mamp server on your Mac for wordpress to work
