# Basic setup instructions?

 * Hello,
    I have installed Postie, and wish to set it up with a Gmail email account.
   I found (from trawling through this support forum) a link to a page giving a 
   few details of settings (there seems to be no link to this page from your website).
   I think I’ve probably got that part to work. Now, how do I actually send an email
   to Postie? Am I missing something or are there no instructions at all on how 
   to do this on your site? Thanks in advance for any help, Paul

 * Huh? I’ve just received a couple of “Unauthorized Post Attempt from…” emails 
   to my Gmail account. Am I supposed to set up a specific email account, just for
   Postie posts? (For example, I’d create a brand new Gmail account with an obscure
   address – [righ8gt7ioru9@gmail.com](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/basic-setup-instructions/righ8gt7ioru9@gmail.com?output_format=md)
   or something – and anything that gets sent there automatically appears as a post
   on my site?) Is that how it works?
 * If so, wouldn’t any spam or other random emails sent to [righ8gt7ioru9@gmail.com](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/basic-setup-instructions/righ8gt7ioru9@gmail.com?output_format=md)
   then get posted to my site?

 * You are correct that there isn’t a basic walkthrough on the site, I need to do
   that.
 * I did reorganize postieplugin.com site, but the FAQ has the topic “Can I use 
   postie to check a Gmail account?” ([http://postieplugin.com/faq/can-use-postie-check-gmail-account/](http://postieplugin.com/faq/can-use-postie-check-gmail-account/))
 * The default settings should be a good place to start.
 * The way it works is that Postie will check the Gmail account from time to time
   and any emails it finds it tries to turn into a post.
 * For new sites the issue typically is that WordPress needs traffic to start scheduled
   tasks like Postie. You can manually check for mail by clicking the “Run Postie”
   button on the Postie settings page.
 * If you’re still having difficulties click the “Run Postie (Debug)” button and

 * By default Postie requires the “from” address to match a WordPress user with 
   permissions to post. If you’re really concerned about this you can make the default
   post status “draft” so nothing gets published automatically.
