Basic Questions (5 posts)

    Hello WP Users,

Here is another thread to clear my basic doubts on themes.

    1. What are the best tools to develop WordPress themes?

    I use the following:
    Created Child theme
    Sublime text
    Demo data creator

Any other tools/plugins you would recommend to me?

    2. How to edit template files the right way?

I often get confused with the structure. Consider wp-adminbar, I can find it in firebug that it is placed after #page but i can't find it in template files.

Can i edit the template files directly or should i have to use functions.php for that?

    Thanks :)

  2. 2. How to edit template files the right way?

I'm not into developing themes as my lack of CSS knowledge is immense ;) but I suggest you get into the habit of editing files either off of your server using your favorite text editor or using a on server editor such as vi (or vim).

The built in WordPress template editor is sparse and if you make a PHP error (easy to do) then you'll need to edit those files from outside the WordPress dashboard. Best IMHO to get used to that from the beginning.

    Just my 2 cents. ;)

1- that seems like a good list of tools.
here are some other tools that can help you develop:

2-I think the toolbar (admin bar) is displayed with the wp_footer action. You can turn the toolbar on or off for the front end of your site in wp-admin > Users > Your Profile.

Also, try not to develop on a live site. http://codex.wordpress.org/Test_Driving_WordPress

You will likely need to know more CSS than just using Firebug can provide...this is a good reference site:

Also, be sure to validate your pages often -- as code errors can cause many problems and frustrations:
