  • I’m thinking about changing my permalinks. Right now they can get quite long as I have them set up as:
    http://www.standard-deviance.com/archives/year/month/date/post-title
I’m thinking about changing the format to something much shorter (take out the title, the date, or both) but I am afraid if I do that people who have linked to me via the old structure will have their links broken. If I change it does WordPress redirect the old links to the new ones?
    Thanks.

  • It is possible to have the older ones and the new ones available, but it gets a bit tricky. It has more to do with how the .htaccess file is set up rather than WP.
I did something similar, so once I got the new rules from WP, I added them to the END of the .htaccess file, rather than replacing it. This way the oldrules get processed first, and the newer ones second. It seems to work, I haven’t had any problems or complaints, but I’m not .htaccess/rewrite expert either, so try it at your own risk.
