Install of WordPress 3.6.1 worked okay, but attempts to upload pictures through wordpress fails with this error message:

    “Error saving media attachment”

…and trying with windows live writer also fails with this error message:

“The pictures cannot be published because the blog does not support picture publishing”

This is my first install of wordpress to check out its functionality. The current theme is 2013, I’ve added a couple of other themes to look at but have not added any plugins. Two plugins seemed to come with the install, but neither of these has been activated.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

    Thanks.

  • Try checking your site’s error logs for a more specific error message. Your hosts should be able to help you accessing your site’s error logs.

Okay – they fixed it and when I asked how got this:

“It is permissions based. The user that the web server runs as needs to have write permission to the uploads folder. So for example if your web server user is example then this user needs write access to that folder.”

Then found this on the support forum here:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/cant-upload-images-41?replies=12#post-1804055

“The solution lies in the way your shared hosting server is setup, some hosting companies slap the default installations and other wiser ones spend their waking hours fine tuning the servers and making them perform faster and work better for their clients. Our servers are configured so Apache runs as the same user as your user (a different one for each website), this means that your user and Apache are the same which makes everyone’s life easier.”

    I asked the hosting company:
So if I do a clean install of wordpress and this problem occurs again:

    1. What permissions do I need to set?

    2. Where do I go to make the changes?

and had this back from the hosting company:

“In something like FileZilla you can right-click folders or files and then change the permissions. Linux normally follows a principal of numbers so for example 0777 means that anyone can right a file in that area.”

I work more with content than the back end of things, so this is beyond me, but I’ve read in a couple of places that using 0777 is not wise?

I’ve asked them about that but haven’t had a reply yet.

    They just told me:

“The folder is not 0777 but this is on some occasions what users do. We made a change that ensure the web process is running as your user and not the shared user”

It is working so I’m happy!

Now off to find a gallery plug-in for wordpress!
