  • I have a problem community member I want to put into the comment blacklist. However his IP is from AOL and they use proxies so he has multiple IPs and all of them appear to be shared. So if I ban all the IPs he has used I will be banning many other AOL members as well. Is there a way around this, possibly using a better tool than the built in one and askimet?

    thanks in advance

not using an IP based solution, no.

but are there other add ons that can help? There must be a way to police people from AOL, otherwise it seems that AOL users are free to bee trolls, pests, etc without consequences….short of webmasters banning all AOL users

…why anyone would use AOL as there ISP anyway is beyond me

the simple fact is that aol users have always been free to be trolls, so to speak..

and no there isnt really a plugin that will help with your specific problem.

You could probably write your own plugin.

Or try adding his name to the banned words list. I think there’s such a thing. Or maybe I’m confusing it with movable type. Either way if there’s not a banned words list I bet you could get one of those as a plugin.

yes there is a ban word list, but of course that is easy to get around.

It is sad to see people say that AOL users have free reign to troll…but I cant figure a way to stop it either

writing my own plugin? I just dont have the skill to do that unfortunately

Well looking at it objectively you’re kinda switching between two positions.

One position you are putting across is that one specific AOL user is causing you a problem. In that case your best recourse may be to report it to the AOL abuse team, though depending on the nature of what the user does, and the effectiveness of the team, there may be no point.

The other position is that all the AOL users are useless trolls. In which case the best way of dealing would be to apply a blanket IP ban across the aol range.

In case someone is wondering —

    http://webmaster.info.aol.com/proxyinfo.html

Like I said, NO plugin, whether you wrote it or not, is going to address that any differently than the current IP banning solutions. (There is a plugin for that, already.)

I am not saying all AOL users are trolls sorry. I am saying that there does not seem to be a way to stop AOL users from being trolls

In this case the troll is just a pest and not risen to the level where AOL would remove him.

anyway thanks for the comments people…it seems to be as I feared…no way around this short of banning all AOLers
