I just received a very similar report to this.
I think the issue is that Dropbox have dropped some of their supported SSL message digest algorithms. Some people now have PHP versions installed that don’t support any algorithms that Dropbox support. Hence this error.
I’d guess Dropbox were responding to Heartbleed.

I wasn’t saying that… your web hosting company just needs to update some components on their webserver. Their PHP install is (if I’ve understood the bug rightly) linked against a very old version of the OpenSSL library. For people with more recent OpenSSL libraries, there will be no problem. I had one report of this problem for a different plugin, and came here to see how common the problem is. These are the only 2 reports relating to Dropbox I’ve spotted so far.

Having said that, though, it would be good to hear from Dropbox officially about the changes they’ve made. I couldn’t spot any announcements they’ve made. I’m guessing they’ve probably assessed that only a tiny number of webservers will have the obsolete openssl library that can’t connect. It’d be interesting to hear it from the horse’s mouth, though.

Yes I know, I asked my internet provider to upgrade OpenSSL library.
They replied that it is not possible as they need to upgrade the whole server first. Upgrade CentOS, PHP, MySQL and Plesk etc. In other words do a migration of all my websites running on this server. Easier said then done.
What I don’t understand is, it worked without any problem before. . . .
Hi, I encountered the exact same problem about two weeks ago, the backup use to dump to Dropbox smoothly, but now it can not, this is quite annoying.

You must download and activate this little wordpress plugin at http://marketpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/backwpup-disable-ssl-verify.zip as you do with any other plugin. Download and activate.
Worked for me.
