Backwards compatibility with PHP < 5.4

    Previous versions worked with PHP 5.3, but the new one gives a fatal error and requires PHP 5.4.

    Some backwards compatibility would be appreciated, as a routine plugin update kills production websites if running on PHP 5.3.
