 * I had the plugin backupwordpress installed and the backups are .tar.gz files.
   I tried extracting them and get an error that says “invalid archive directory”.
 * I have searched the backupwordpress plugin for instructions on how to restore
   and can’t find any. My assumption is that I somehow have to get this .tar.gz
   file to a .sql file and then import through the phpMyAdmin.
 * Thanks for any help or direction you can offer.

 * Austink,
 * Are you using Windows? If not, what platform?
 * You need to make sure you have a utility that will un-tar these backups and the
   built-in functionality in Windows won’t as far as I know.
 * There are open source alternatives out there like:

    [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7-Zip](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7-Zip)
 * Once you’ve decompressed the file, you will use phpMyAdmin to restore.

 * I am using Windows. I thought that your suggestion was going to solve my problems.
 * I downloaded 7-zip and chose to extract the backup file which was .tar.gz and
   it gave me a .tar file. I tried to extract the .tar file and nothing happens?
 * I must be missing something, since it just doesn’t seem like it should be this
   tough.
