Backup to different location

PO files are backed up to the same location as the originals. This is unlikely to change, but could potentially become a configurable setting in future versions.

If you’re translating someone else’s plugin and plan on updating it, I suggest storing your translations in the global languages directory under wp-content. This is exactly what it’s for – so plugin updates don’t remove or overwrite your files.
