    I just ran a backup for the first time and the log on my server says the backup was finished, but the status says there are 0 backups available.

    That log shows UpdraftPlus stopping at a very early stage, before it accomplishes anything useful. Can you access the PHP logs on your server to see if there is anything recorded there? (Sometimes this is a file error_log in the wp-admin directory, but not always).
