Support » Plugin: UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin » Backup stalling on a particular file

    Hello,

I’ve been using UpdraftPlus for a while and it has been working fine until one day it just stopped working and stalled when backing up. I’ve started to exclude directories in the uploads and plugins directory try and narrow down the problem.

With the uploads directory I’ve been excluding each directory by month to try and pinpoint the problem file. Unfortunately, even if I can identify the month directory that is causing the issue, there’s still hundreds of image files in that directory. Are there any known restrictions on file lengths that might be causing an issue, or file sizes or anything else that UpdraftPlus might be hitting that causes it to just stall? There are no error messages in the log, I watch it backup and it goes quickly and then hits a certain file (doesn’t say where) and just stops.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get UpdraftPlus working again? Even within the directory I can only exclude files by beginning characters or filename. We only have png or jpg files, which kind of narrows it down, but not enough to be very accurate. And if I use the beginning character exclusion rule, we have filenames beginning with all different characters so this isn’t accurate either.

I’ve tried changing the archive size and changing it right down to 20mb but this has no effect.

    Any help would be appreciated,

    Thank you

Thank you David, I’ll do this and get back to you.

    Hi David

Here is a log from a backup I tried today. I ticked plugins, themes and uploads.
    https://pastebin.com/N2ajvvJ0

This message came up before the backup had ended.

    Fri, December 28, 2018 10:11
Warning: C:\inetpub\wordpress/wp-content/updraft: The backup directory is not writable (or disk space is full) – the database backup is expected to shortly fail.

    The last log message was:
The backup apparently succeeded (with warnings) and is now complete (Dec 28 11:00:07)

But no uploads, themes or plugins have been backed up, I think the database backup failed in the middle somewhere and this last log message is erroneous.

I have full permissions to that directory, plus it’s parent directory. This is on a Windows 2016 Server Standard on IIS 10.

    I hope this helps
    Thanks

    Hi,

    Thank you.

Are there any other backups recorded as having taken place at the same time (e.g. a Database backup)?

Please could you check the available disk space for the site? Is the quota full?

    Hi DNutbourne

There is 65.8gb free space on the drive where the files are being backed up. No quotas are in place. The server VM is dedicated to the WordPress blog so there are no other services that would be interrupting the UpdraftPlus backup

    Thanks

    Hi,

Please could you send us a copy of all recent log files?
These can be found in the wp-content/updraft directory of the site via FTP.

    Hi DNutbourne,

Please find a link to the log files in the updraft directory https://mdanational.sharefile.com/d-s2918c2f7aa9403db

    Hi,

The recent backups still show behaviour that would indicate that the WordPress scheduler is not functioning correctly. Was the alternate cron system deactivated?

    Hi DNutborne

    Yes, I have
    define( ‘ALTERNATE_WP_CRON’, true );
in my wp-config file above the line that says “Stop Editing!”

    Thanks

    Hi,

Please could you test a manual backup, refreshing the page every 5-10 minutes (for at lest 30 minutes)?

Does the backup proceed beyond the first run and complete?

    Hi DNutbourne

Sorry I’ve finally got to doing this, it’s been busy lately. I set a timer and started a backup with all options ticked. Every 5 minutes I hit refresh until the 30 minutes was up.
It hit a certain spot then stopped even after the refreshes, then it finally threw an error and closed the backup.

I’ve attached two logs as they were progressing through, and a server error that occurred once when I refreshed and finally the end log file. In the screenshots you can see the warning about backup directory not being writable and disk space is full but I’ve checked this multiple times unless I’m still missing something.

    Hi,

    Apologies for the delay.

From the log it appears that the server is very slow when attempting to write to the backup file.
This would suggest that the server is overloaded and near its memory limit.

I would recommend asking your hosts/server admin to check the load on the server around the time of the backup.
Please could you also ask them to check for the record of the 500 error that occurred in the PHP error logs?
