 * Basically, WordPress can’t change (i.e. “write to”) your wp-content folder. It
   needs to create a backup directory in your wp-content folder, and then add things
   to that directory.
 * You need to change the CHMOD settings for that folder. You can do that with your
   FTP program, just google around for how to do it. The recommended value for folders
   is 755, but you should change it back to what it was once wordpress has finished
   writing to it, for security reasons.

 * Thanks for your reply
 * Its showing me one warning as it was showing two before. The warning is
 * WARNING: Your backup directory is NOT writable! We can not create the backup
   directory.
    /home/virtual/site45/fst/var/www/html/
 * I have change the permission to 755 to wp-content dir but still it is the same

 * Its working now. I give the 777 permission to the backup folder which resolve
   the issue.
 * Thanks for your help

 * I gave 777 permissions to the wp-content to the wp-content folder, but I still
   get this same warning and I cannot backup.

 * Same problem here on one of my four WordPress systems. The problems remains even
   after the latest upgrade (2.1). I figure it must be something withe the permission
   given by the webspace admin. Have no trouble at all with the other systems that
   runs at webspaces provided by other companies.
 * Does anyone know if there is any convenient way to check this?

 * Help, please!
    I got the same error message, so I tried to apply advice from
   above. Using WS_FTP, I accessed my remote WordPress folder, right-clicked on
   the “wp-content” folder and chose “CHMOD” in the context menu. There I clicked
   the “write” option for “Group” and “Other”, then clicked “OK”. When I returned
   to the other browser tab, where I had the WP-admin panel open, it said “page
   no longer valid”, so I logged into my wp-admin again … but there was no “backup”
   button any more – and – far worse – when I click on “view site”, I get a blank,
   white page! My blog seems to have gone. Luckily, when I click on “manage – posts”
   the posts still seem to be there. But nothing is shown at the blog address. What
   can I do? I’d be most grateful for helpful advice.
 * And another question: if backing up is such trouble – is it even worth it?

 * Okay, nobody reads this anyway, because the thread is marked “resolved”, so –
   hm.
    My problem has been solved, too, in case anyone cares 😉

 * Same situation on one of my blogs. The backup works fine on all others.
    “WARNING:
   Your wp-content directory is NOT writable! We can not create the backup directory.”
   when entering backup
 * I temporarily changed the file permissions for wp_content and all subfolders
   to 777 – the error messagewas gone, but when I actually tried to backup the selected
   items, I got
    “Creating backup file… Could not open the backup file for writing!”.
   Gave up for now – and changed permissions back.
