Backup fails to start: nothing after [INFO] lines

When I click Run Now, I don’t get the progress bars and the log has nothing after the [INFO] – it appears to just get stuck.
I believe that it is either unable to start a seperate process for the backup as it doesn’t make any difference whether I back up to disk, Dropbox, etc. or if I back up the database, files, or even just the plugin list.
It worked fine out the box with 2 other hosts I use.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
