What is the best way to backup my blog so I can update? I'm afraid it will crash. If something happens and it does crash how will use the backup to restore the blog? Do I have to backup the database too for the backup to work? Oh, sorry, and this is my blog.

Most of what makes your website "yours" is in the database. So backing it up is essential.
The files you need to backup are your images and media, also your theme and plugin selection, all of these need to be backed up.
The other website files are totally generic, backing them up is a matter of convenience, it is often easier to backup everything rather than pick and choose.

I use the website hosting management panel to access the tools which do the database and file backup. There are plugins that do this too.

There are a variety of ways to backup your blog, all detailed at http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups

Most importantly, pick the method that you're comfortable with. Backups are important to keep regularly, so you don't want to miss out on them just because you don't like your chosen method. ;)
