Support » Fixing WordPress » Backing up an old version of WP before upgrading

  • I just took over a site running 3.3.1 and I’d like to back up the site and move it to local host so I can test the upgrade process locally to make sure nothing breaks. I’ve looked at BackWPup but it requires WP 3.4 to do it’s thing. I also looked at BackUpWordPress but it needs 3.3.3. Anybody know a tool that will back up a site that’s running 3.3.1 or will I need to manually it up?

  • Why are you using an old copy of WordPress? Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked? You need to upgrade WordPress asap. As you have such an old version of WordPress, you will need to carry out a series of smaller manual upgrades. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended for the full details.

Yeah, it’s true. It’s just how I found it when I took it over and now I need to back it up and upgrade it. Thanks for the link.

I’d suggest that you try manually backing up your database until you’ve upgraded to at least WP 3.7.

BackUpWordPress should actually work fine with 3.3.1

Thansk Tom but BackUpWordPress claims to require 3.3.3 thoughts?

It’s worth keeping in mind that Tom is one of the developers of BackUpWordPress, so his word is probably fairly reliable. You could, if you wanted, use an older version of the plugin that explicitly supports 3.3.1. Based on a quick glance, I think 1.6.9 is the most recent version to match that description.

Cyril thanks! I noticed Tom is one of the developers, but the current BackUpWordPress threw a fatal error when I tried it saying I need at least 3.3.3. However, you were right I tried their 1.6.9 version of the plugin and it worked! So, thanks again!
