background image of header and stretch header and footer

    I uploaded an image in twenty twelve for the header background and it is showing up below the menu.

    Also I would like the header and the footer to stretch across the whole page.

    You’ll need to create a child theme and then modify the header.php in the child theme to move the navigation.

    What I need is for the background image to show up in the header.

    The header is in the right place, but the image will not go into it when I place it through the header add background image.

    It shows up below the menu.

    The header image in that theme IS below the menu – that’s how it’s designed. You can change that, but then you’ll need a child theme.
    That’s because if you change theme files, your changes will be overwritten when WP is updated and it’s also crucial to have an unmodified copy for troubleshooting purposes. So if you want to make any changes to theme files (i.e. style.css or any .php files) you need to do so in a child theme.
