 * back ups are being created and using up my disk space on my server. i don’t want
   the back ups to be created.

 * WordPress does not create backups on its own. You must have a plugin that’s doing
   this. Check the plugin’s settings.
 * By the way, not making backups is A Bad Idea. Use a plugin like BackWPUp, which
   can store the backups offsite (e.g., on Dropbox).
