# Automatically updated?!

 * Seriously WordPress, you [redacted] up bigtime here.
 * I just got an e-mail telling me that ‘WordPress has been automatically updated’.
   What the f*@#!? Who said you could do that? Now my WordPress site doesn’t work
   anymore and I may go and find where the problem lies and how to fix it. Thanks
   a million!
 * I HAVE NOT configured anything like this nor have I ever been notified of an 
   automatic update feature. Have you even considered that (many) people tweak WordPress?

 * This is, and has been, the default behavior for WP for a long time. Minor upgrades(
   e.g. 4.7 to 4.7.1) are automatic. Major upgrades (4.6 to 4.7) are not.
 * You can change this if you like:

 * FYI, WordPress has had automatic updating for minor versions enabled by default
   since the release of WordPress 3.7, in October 2013.
 * So, that’s been enabled for almost three and half years now, give or take.

 * Hi, it happend to me too, if you are using a VPS you can verify if you have snapshot
   service activated and you return to your old version.
    For my case it saved me!

   confidence that that will never, ever, happen. It makes zero sense for us to 
   allow sites to knowingly and willingly remain insecure behind a simply user-friendly
   checkbox.
 * There are ways to disable automatic updates if you so choose. We have [big guides detailing exactly how to do that](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2013/10/25/the-definitive-guide-to-disabling-auto-updates-in-wordpress-3-7/).
   But it won’t ever be a user-facing option, because a user should never have an
   option that is essentially “make my site less secure”.

 * WordPress has a responsibility to keep the web a secure place, so I don’t think
   prompting users to opt out of minor security updates is a good move.
