• Hi, I received an email today telling me that my website has been has been updated automatically to WordPress 4.3.2. by the WordPress Team. Thats kind but a) I didn’t want it and b) was told by the person who created it not to update it. Now none of my background images are showing up and there could be other technical changes I am not aware off especially as don’t have any technical knowledge and can’t go back to the person who created it. Am I snookered or is there a solution out there?

My site was created using an existing theme that was rewritten to suit my design preferences which is why I was told not to update anything. Firstly, can I stop automatic updates happening and what can happen in the future if I don’t update WordPress? Secondly, can I just select and replace my background images for each of my pages…is it as simple as that?

Thanks to anyone who can help. If you can, please explain what I need to do in layman’s terms.
    Cheers.

yes. Here is the WP codex guide on how to:

Secondly, can I just select and replace my background images for each of my pages…is it as simple as that?

The upgrade I’ve had has effected my site so that the background images I have on my pages do not show up when someone is viewing the site so it looks incomplete. On screen you just get a swirling timer which is searching for the images. When I check the detail for each page the background images are listed in the right section but I’m assuming maybe some coding has changed so there is no link to the images. Do I need to re-upload them or adjust my page info or can it require more in depth sorting out. I can forward the site address so you can see for yourself what is happening?

I am a complete layman when it comes to coding. So where exactly do I place WP codex info to turn off auto updates?

    Thanks.

Can you give us a link to your page?

    Try a plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/stops-core-theme-and-plugin-updates/

    Have you tried:
    – Flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches. Also, any op cache or content network cache, as well as Cloudflare, clear those caches.
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder (if you have created such folder). The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old.
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Sixteen, etc.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins). If you don’t have access to your admin area, use FTP , or your web-host’s cPanel or whatever file management application your host provides (no Dashboard access required). Navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder by adding “-old” to the end of the folder name. Alternately, you can remove other themes except the default theme. That will force your site to use it.
    – If all the above steps do not resolve the issue, then try MANUALLY updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first.
Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong.

where exactly do I place WP codex info to turn off auto updates?

The codex guide I linked in my previous reply has all the info you need.

Looks like there’s at least one bug in your theme. Your theme support can be found on the author’s website: http://support.progressionstudios.com/

Thanks for the advice so far. However, as I only use my website from a content management point of view and did not put it together I really only understand some of the jargon being used and although I get the concept I don’t actually know where to start to implement any of it. 🙁 I’m also hesitant to tinker and make the website worse than it already is as I really won’t have a clue to fix that either.

If I restore my last backup via my hosting platform cpanel will that restore the earlier WP version and the background images etc or could there still be a bug remaining from this current upgrade?

I can see from http://support.progressionstudios.com/ that there have been issues with the sliders and background images but can’t register without a payment code as I didn’t buy the theme myself. Is there a way round this to see if I can ask for help on that forum?
