Support » Fixing WordPress » Automatic upgrade to 3.5 failed. My whole site went down

  • Hi. I wanted to upgrade my site’s WordPress today to 3.5. I saw that it was possible to use automatic update so I thought it would be a simple process.
I get the following message as I install:
    Unpacking the update…

    Verifying the unpacked files…

    Installing the latest version…

    Could not copy file.: /www/wp/wp-includes/template.php

    Installation Failed
Now my whole site is down, and I can’t access the wp-admin either. I guess I somehow must reinstall it using Filezilla for example, but I’m hoping someone could help me how I should proceed to restore my site, so that I don’t mess it up further.

  • Try:
    – switching to the Twenty Twelve theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php
