Why does this error stymie my attempts to upgrade to the latest version (3.4.1)?

    Task Name: maintmode
Task Description: Puts the site into maintenance mode
    Task Status: Failed
    Task Start Date: 2012-08-06 23:09:16
    Task End Date: 2012-08-06 23:09:16
    Task Log:
Putting the site into maintenance mode /var/www/vhosts/greenfriends.org.uk/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade
    Copying /var/www/vhosts/greenfriends.org.uk/httpdocs/index.php to /var/www/vhosts/greenfriends.org.uk/httpdocs/index.php.wpau.bak
    The file was successfully copied
Moving the maintenance file to root
ERROR -> Could not put the site into maintenance mode

    Please advise.

My webhost insists that I must apply the following permissions to the whole site: 755 for folders, and 644 for files. I left 777 for the upgrade folder, but it has made no difference.

Is it impossible for a non-expert to upgrade a WordPress site???

Please see this report, if your site is as in the details above.

I don’t understand. I already subscribe to Sucuri, who have advised me to disregard the warnings you refer to.

Fine. I just brought it up to your notice because such problems often cause issues like you describe above.

Anyway upgrading Plesk (version 9) to the current version may perhaps help.

Plesk runs on my web host’s server. The version is 9.5.4.

I am on the brink of paying for the upgrade to be carried out. So much for automatic upgrading.
