Support » Fixing WordPress » Automatic update to 3.8.2 broke my site

  • Hi,

I got an email saying the website has been updated to WP 3.8.2
Now when I go to the website I cant access it.
Firstly it gives me a 404 error and when I try to login via wp-login.php it goes to the wp-admin/install.php prompts for installing it afresh.

Do I just keep going with the fresh install or has it been corrupted?

try deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try deactivating via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    – If that fails to resolve the issue, try MANUALLY re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!
BTW, if you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. It’s a great safety net.

    This is good advice @tara,

However there are still a number of issues with Automatic Updates. Please turn them off. People need to control their own updates when they’re ready. We’re losing a large number of websites to corruption because of this Automatic Upgrade.
There must be a choice somewhere that will allow people to stop automatic updates if they wish to do so.

Also a question from what you are referring here. What does the ‘database upgrade’ do during a WordPress update ? I need to know as I need to know how the main tables shown above have been corrupted by the ‘database upgrade’.

    Please respond
