    I logged on to word press and hit the automatic update button. How long does it take to do the update before I can access my Site again?

    It should take less than 30 seconds.

    it has been 9+ hours. what do I do to fix this?

    Stop the upgrade
    Deactivate all plugins
    Switch to the default theme
    Backup your database.
    Re-run the upgrade.
