# automatic renumbering?

 * Are footnotes automatically renumbered if you insert some text with a new footnote
   in it? For example, if you have some text with 3 footnotes numbered 1 to 3, and
   you insert some new text with a footnote between footnotes 1 and 2, is the new
   footnote automatically numbered 2 and the former footnotes 2 and 3 renumbered
   3 and 4?
 * I have downloaded the Modern Footnotes plugin and installed it, but I haven’t
   been able to get it it to work yet.

 * Hello,
 * Yes, footnotes get renumbered as you describe. Footnotes will be numbered sequentially,
   starting at 1, according to the order of the footnotes, even if you go back and
   add in a new footnote in between two footnotes that already existed.
 * The footnote shortcode has an option to override the number that is displayed
   if needed, but it is not used by default.

 * Ah many thanks Sean. That’s great news.
 * As I say, I have installed the Modern Footnotes plugin, so I now have to try 
   and work out why I can’t get it to work. It’s probably my fault. I have been 
   using the Classic Editor for many years and am struggling to transition to the
   Gutenberg one.
