 * Tonight I crashed a WP site by altering some php code and not copying it onto
a text pg. It was for a plugin for a slideshow called Camera.
    I was able to
restore it, for $15.00, through my host at Hostgator.com. *which were VERY HELPFUL
btw* I realize I can get plugins to backup, but in this case, I could not even
access my dashboard. Nothing. Just long lines of text about something not found
in lines 3,5 in functions.php. That said, I realize I should have had that functions.
php file copied. But, I didn’t. And, besides, I pulled up the original file and
made the corrections to the corrupted file that I had inserted the php into for
the slideshow and it didn’t fix it. I dunno what happened. Nonetheless, it served
as a lesson to me about backing up WP files. Local files I use for Dreamweaver
files are auto backed up with Carbonite.
 * So, how do you guys backup with a NON-PLUGIN backup?
    Thanks, Mark p.s., I know
I can FTP in and download the whole folder, which I already did. But still, is
there some automatic way to backup WP files?

 * Depending on hour hosting company and what control panel that you run, you can
do this. I mainly use CPanel, and thats got some good back up systems integrated
in it. There’s also some automated systems out there that can do back ups of
   your site as well.
 * I got a newsletter form Hostgator a couple of days ago that said that they were
introducing a new backup plan as well that’s a little bit extra on top of the
hosting cost, so that could be worth looking into.
 * But this again brings up the point of making sure that you have current backup
before doing anything! Fixing things that people have broken on their sites is
a decent amount of my work. 😉

 * You could also use a back up plugin like [http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/backwpup/](http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/backwpup/)
 * This plugin backs up your theme, database, plugins, wordPress core files, uploads….
You can choose your settings and also choose where it uploads files. It’s very
   useful.

 * Very good and thanks. I’ll look into that.
That’ll be fine if the backup is
accessible inside my Hostgator Cpanel. And I can restore from there. Because,
as it was with my crash, I had NO access to my WP Dashboard to make changes.
