Is it possible to create a multisite that enables users to customize the appearance/logo and colors of their specific site? I am trying to create a membership site similar to that of “trainual.com” Where the main site is basically cloned, but users will have their own subdomain and the ability to upload the materials that pertain to their group. Is this possible and what tools would you recommend? Lastly, is there anyway to automate this process without having to download/export the main site into the subdomain? So once a person signs up and purchases a membership, the site and subdomain can be created automatically without having to deal with DNS. I tried using NS Cloner, but it doesn’t allow subdomains. Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks!

    Hi @ttate81,

Yes, it’s possible to set up a multisite that allows new users to sign up and choose from a number of different WordPress themes. Many themes allow customization of layout, colors, logos etc.

With that said it can be fairly challenging to set up a multisite network with the processes you mentioned using free plugins. There are premium WordPress plugins specifically designed to manage the challenging parts of setting up a multisite network including handling payments, plan levels, setting up initial content, custom domain mapping, updating nameservers etc. WP Ultimo is one that I can personally recommend that’s worth looking at.

You can also take a look at: https://github.com/wpmudev

This is a github repository of all the plugins that wpmudev.com released last year. Many of them are specific to multisite and provide solutions to the issues you mentioned above. Note though that these plugins are no longer supported so for many people using a premium solution that has ongoing support will be a better option.
