Support » Fixing WordPress » Auto Upgrade not working

  • I have this message at the top of my page

An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now.

When I click to do what it says I get taken to a 404

Then that clears and I try and do a couple of upgrades and I get

Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.

    My site keeps going down

    Please help

  • Something on your server may be causing problems with the WordPress automatic update feature.

One possible solution would be to run a “manual” update – which is basically downloading the latest version of WordPress, unzipping it, and then uploading the new files over the old ones on your server with the following exceptions (don’t upload these!): wp-config.php file and the wp-content folder.

If that still doesn’t resolve the issue, you may need to check with your hosts to ensure the server meets the minimum requirements to run WordPress 3.8.1. Also check file and folder permissions.

    Hi there bemdesign

Why would 1stAngel not want to upload wp-config.php file? This is not an instruction given on the wordpress update page:

What should 1stAngel do if they have already uploaded the wp-config.php file?…delete it?

Hey 1stAngel, I would recommend you to get a good hosting sever such as HostGator which they provide a service in their cPanel which install wordpress to a chosen site very fast. you can use it to auto update from there instead. if your website keep going down…

    then they is two possibility.
    1. Sever downtime
    2. Website overload

hope this help. you might want to back up your site too before changing anything.

Ok, thanks but none of this has helped I am afraid

    I am with Hostgator

I already have had an automatic update work so I know it does work

and I am still stuck with this error message and if I try and update WP manually it puts me in maintenance mode again. In fact I can do no updates of anything since I had this error

I am on VPS and have been running my site now since 2004

@fee McQ – you don’t want to overwrite the wp-config.php file on the server as that’s essential to making WordPress run and if your “local” wp-config file is different then the one on the server, you can easily take down your site!

If you do need to edit the wp-config file, download the one from the server first then make your changes and upload it back to the server, overwriting the old one. Basically don’t overwrite wp-config unless you really mean it!

@1stangel: as I noted the first time, something on your server is preventing the Automatic Update from working correctly. Contact your host and let them know that WordPress’ automatic updates are not working where they had been working previously. Ask them to look at the server logs as this may provide helpful information to determine what’s going wrong.
