In the index.php replace `the_content` with `the_excerpt`. This is not a too fancy option, but perhaps your theme handles it well. Alternally you can use a plugin. There are plenty of excerpt plugins. I’m not a coder enough to know what the results of that may be. Besides, I don’t know either plugin. I think Excerpt Editor is more easily replaceable, but also more easily coded than that other plugin.
