The Auto-Close Comments plugin (http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Auto_shutoff_comments) is pretty much what I wanted, but in addition to shutting off comments and pings, it hides the comments that were left before the shutoff. Is that because I altered the layout of the template or is that the default behavior?

And has anyone written another plugin for handling this? And what about “undoing” this one?

    Thanks!

I have that plugin, and have used it, and not experienced that problem.

Im guessing youve altered comments.php or your theme files in such a way that if comments are closed theyre lost — the various <div>s that control what the comments look like are tricky to edit, since youre managing what a site looks like when comments are open and when they are closed differently.

and by lost, I mean that they dont display, not that theyre lost from the db 😛

Thanks, whooami! I figured it was probably the theme changes I made. I’ll look over the original and see how I might fix it so the comments show up.
