Author Page URL

Hello.

I’ve been working with author pages and lately came across a strange problem. I know its been discussed here (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/33064), but the subject, once brought up, died up before explaination or anything.

I’ve coded an author Profile according to the entry in the codex. However, I can only view the author information through this kind of url: /?author=1 and not how I prefer it, which is /archives/author/name

Is there any reason why this happens, or even better, a solution? Especially since all of WordPress’s default tags like to link to the 2nd, non-working profile page.
