Author page link not working??

I have created an author page template following the documentation and it works for some authors but not all.
The authors that work have the URL http://www.site.com/author/authorname
The authors that do not work have the URL http://www.site.com/author/Author Name
If I edit the user_nicename in the database to a single name it will work.
Should the nicename be input into the database with spaces by default?
