This is a feature which is not implemented. But, you can choose a dedicated image for an author.
Add the authors avatar to the media library.
Go to default images and add the rule Taxonomy: Author and Value: [Name].
Choose the authors image
Add a rule for each author.

Thanks for the prompt reply. your answer was really helpful, but it still is causing me a bit of a problem, because I have a constantly growing author base. that said I can’t manage to add a new picture for each author and to update each author’s picture when they want. If you know anyway where we can implement this rule for all authors to add and update their own featured image on the frontend that would be great.

The option for your authors for uploading and editing their image should be a custom feature. Because it is just an image in the media library, you need to limit the authors access to just this single image. Currently I don’t have a recommendation for a plugin which supports you to achieve this goal.
Quick Featured Images itself has currently no option to support you.
I will discuss internal if this could be a feature for an upcoming update.
Beside this I hope Quick Featured Images helps you on your website.
