 * Hi there,
 * Variations are children of variable products. In order to import variations you
   must first import the parent products.

 * You may want to look into using a plugin such as our [Product CSV Import Suite](https://woocommerce.com/products/product-csv-import-suite/)
   to import your product variations.

 * Hi Amanda, First off thanks for taking the time to reply, however I dont need
   to pay for your product as now the standard woocommerce plugin comes with the
   import and export feature built in
 * I once managed to get it working however had to delete all products and start
   again as there was error in my description so I do know it works however on the
   second import the attribute doesnt import – these are variable product its just
   an attribute im trying to get to work for left hand filtering purposes
 * So are you saying i need the attribute set first in attributes before i attempt
   the import?

 * Yes, that is correct. You will need to first import the parent variable product
   and have the correct attributes already created before you import your variations.

 * ok i tried this and still no avail – i set the attribute header as “model” and
   attribue name as “model”
 * just a typo in my last message these **are not** variable products i am trying
   to set an attribute for, they are simple products

 * [@chrisjako](https://wordpress.org/support/users/chrisjako/) – I just tested
   this with a simple product and it worked perfectly. Here’s an example of what
   the header columns and values looked like:
 * [http://cld.wthms.co/4VMByt](http://cld.wthms.co/4VMByt)
 * And when the product is imported:
    [http://cld.wthms.co/h3zCmG](http://cld.wthms.co/h3zCmG)
 * You also need to make sure that after you upload your CSV file you map all of
   those attribute fields properly; it won’t always happen automatically, particularly
   if your header columns are not perfectly named.

 * We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’m going to mark this as resolved–
   if you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.
