 * Once installed, I started getting login attempts from an “Unknown” user. It’s
   happening once an hour.

 * If the user field would be left empty when attempting to login it should show
   empty in the Login Lockdown log as well. Maybe someone is trying to login with“
   Unknown” as the username?
 * Where are you seeing this in the log though? Maybe the user is empty and you 
   are seeing the “Unknown” in the Location column?
