I need help understanding what “attached” means. I thought it meant that a media file (say an image) was being used in a post or page.

However, I have a post, that clearly has a file “attached” to it – but when I look in my media library the file is listed as “unattached”.

    Can someone help me understand?

I am trying to clean up my library and wanted to delete unattached media. But, now I can’t do that because if I do, I will be inadvertently deleting media that I am indeed using in posts….am I being totally dense here? Thanks for any guidance!!!

An attachment to a page or post is created when a file is uploaded via the Add Media options whilst editing that page or post.

so if i upload an image to the media library and then, at some point later, insert it into a post – it’s not technically attached to that post?

    Correct.
