Assign Groups To Pages – Questions

    Just looking for a bit of clarification on this.

    I created 3 test groups from the Groups > Groups > New Group dashboard menu. These new groups create without any capabilities so we assign them. If I assign “groups_read_post” to all the test groups and then create a page and try to restrict the page to a specific group it clusters all the test groups to that page.

    If I create a group on the fly via the “Quick-create group & capability” It creates my group (e.g Test Group 4) and then creates and assigns it a capability of “Test Group 4”; only then does it allow me to assign a page to just 1 group.

    So basically for every group that gets created that needs access to specific pages they need a custom capability that’s just for them? If we have 30 groups that all need different pages we need to create 30 custom capabilities?

    Additionally, when creating groups to protect pages on the fly the capabilities that get assigned also get added to the “Capabilities” section under Groups > Options. If we’re not creating groups on the fly should we be adding the custom capabilities we create to that section as well?

    Hi,

    Basically if you want 10 pages that should be restricted to 10 different groups, then you would need to create those 10 group-capability sets and have them assigned to each respective page. If you have pages that should be viewable by several groups, you can assign the corresponding capabilities so that the related group members can view them.

    If you’re not using the quick create option, then you’d have to create and enable those capabilities for access restriction and assign them to the groups that should be able to have access. The quick create feature does that for you so unless you’re trying to set up something more specific, you wouldn’t need to do those steps manually.
