Hi, I want to assign some products to more than one category but without changing the url. Almost all of them are indexed by Google and I do not want to make changes that can generate 404 errors.

My question is how to assign more categories and that the URL remains as it is now (and how Google has it indexed). The tests I have done so far do change the URL (sometimes), although in reality both URLs address the same product and I do not understand this behavior very well either.

In summary: I have a URL structure, a sitemap and an indexing that I do not want to change. How can I assign more categories to a product without affecting it?

    Thank you

  • Sorry but why do you have categories in URL ?
I am just wondering, because I do not have them and can assign products to many categories without any problem ?

Because it is very positive for both UX and SEO.

If you have the product category as part of the URL, then there’s no way to guarantee what you’re looking for here since a Product “Cap” that belongs to 2 categories “Apparel” & “Accessories” can be accessed at both /accessories/cap/ and /apparel/cap/.

Your shop page will probably retain the link to the category that the product was originally assigned to, but both URLs are crawlable by Google.

I am sure that is not so good for SEO to have the same products under different links.
Not a good idea at first to put categories in url, just a source of useless problems.

Tanks @luminus, I’ll keep it in mind.

I can assure you that it is positive to have the categories in the url although, of course, we must avoid duplications as primary goal.

And I do not say just me, there are many sources like this: that says: “Optimal Format:

    There are sources for everything…
But still, if you do not block google it will see the same products under 2 urls and this is clearly wrong for SEO.
And anyway no single trick is really positive for SEO, it’s only a global things, and the most important is content, anything can be forgotten and considered as useless.

To change the URL structure of your site in the manner in which you’re attempting you will most likely have to set up 301 redirects for any old urls pointing those to the new urls.
