article title color

I know that the documentation says that Sp inherits coding from the theme. For some reason int he theme I am using the feed titles and articles are all coming up in black and I wanted the title a different color.
I went to the custom formatting and entered this in the article title.
<h3><span style=”color: #ec651b;”>title</span></h3>

It doesn’t work, not sure if it is my caching or not.

Does the article formatting override whatever is in my CSS?

The only CSS I see for SP is the tabber and I wasn’t sure what to do.
