Is it possible, either as is or with a plugin, to arrange and rename the default widget areas in the admin area of the widgets. I am trying to organize it better for the client for usability purposes.

Th order of the sidebars/widget areas is defined by your theme. What theme are you using? Where did you download it from?

great, thanks I have contacted them as well. Just wasn’t sure if it was specific to the theme or not.

It’s totally theme-specific. To be precise, it’s down to the order in which the widget-ready areas are registered in the theme.
