Support » Plugin: QuickShare » Are you still supporting this plugin? Conflict with Yoast SEO.

  • Hi Nick, I’ve been using your QuickShare plugin for years. I’ve been so very happy with it. I saw somewhere in a review or something that Quickshare is lightweight compared to other sharing plugins and it really is. So I hope that you’re still supporting this plugin… but I see that you haven’t responded to support questions in about 6 months. I hope all is well. I wrote to you on your website but didn’t hear back. So… I’m trying to reach you here re: a conflict with Yoast SEO. I’m thinking that the conflict lies with Yoast, not with Quickshare… based on the number of support requests on WordPress.org where people are saying that the last several updates to Yoast have caused them problem. But I thought I’d still write to you and see if you can help with this issue…

On the sites where I’ve been using Yoast SEO and Quickshare for a while… when I update to the latest version of each site, there’s no conflict. But I just tried adding the latest version of Yoast SEO to a new site — along with Quickshare — and the only way that I can get the Quickshare bar to display at the bottom of my posts is if I disable Yoast SEO.

Can you please help? Thanks in advance.

Hi, that’s definitely a concern if there’s a conflict, but it’s most likely the fault of Yoast SEO. This plugin does fairly straightforward filtering of the_content, whereas that plugin does countless different things that could cause the basic usage here to break. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the Yoast SEO plugin, I can’t try to locate the issue there, but hopefully they can resolve it soon.

Hi Nick, I didn’t see your response until just now. Unfortunately, the people at Yoast have *not* responded. This is so upsetting because I use QuickShare and Yoast on all of my websites. I’ll try writing to them again. Meantime, I’m a huge fan of yours. QuickShare is really a great plugin. Thanks for replying.

Hi Nick, Can you please take a look at the following link? It’s a thread on GitHub regarding this conflict. I can’t believe that the man responding to me closed the topic before I was done. His last response ?

“Ok, so QuickShare plugin uses global $quickshare_in_excerpt variable to set a flag if excerpt was retrieved. If it was then it kills the output. Problem is that it doesn’t care about the context where was excerpt called, or how many times, or anything else.

Any plugin that retrieves excerpt data for any purpose will cause that.

Overall — not our problem. :)”

Can you please help me? I very much need to be able to use QuickShare *and* Yoast SEO.

OK… hi Nick, I heard back from Yoast SEO again. I asked them:

“QuickShare and Yoast SEO played nicely together until this last update from Yoast. QuickShare and Yoast continue to play nicely on my older sites that started out with older versions of Yoast. QuickShare has stayed at v1.5 for quite some time. It wasn’t until I installed a new WordPress install recently, installed QuickShare v.1.5 and then installed Yoast 2.3.4 that I had any issues.”

    and they replied:

“That doesn’t change the situation. It’s not an issue with our plugin, what our code does is normal. It’s an edge case QuickShare currently doesn’t handle and that’s not for us to deal with.”

Can you please help me? I love your plugin!

Does turning off QuickShare’s Open Graph Meta Tags (last item in Settings > QuickShare > QuickShare Config) make any difference? Yoast SEO adds these. I’m about to try QuickShare on a site with Yoast SEO.

Well, thenightrider… that didn’t work. I tried it, too. Nick, can you help us, pleaseeeeee???????? I love your plugin and I don’t want to have to change to another sharing plugin. My clients have to use Yoast SEO. My older sites that had both Quickshare and Yoast SEO installed on them still work… even after making the updates to the most current version of both plugins. But now I’ve got two sites that are new that are not working. As soon as I deactivate Yoast SEO, Quickshare works. As I mentioned above, Yoast SEO’s support team claims that it’s a problem on your side of things. Is there a possibility that you can reach out to them and get this fixed? I don’t mean to be pesky… I ask because I’m such a fan of your plugin. Please help us. We need your plugin… it’s so great!

P.S. The first site is http://www.ijdiamonds.com (a work in progress) and the other site I mentioned just above is: http://archwayromania.wpengine.com/ – another work in progress. I sure would love to launch both of these sites with QuickShare working.

Heh, Heh, @pagan11460, I like Yoast SEO as well, but it’s been one of the buggiest plugins on the repository (with the exception of NextGEN Gallery, the horror show that finally ended). If I was placing bets, I’d point the finger at Yoast, because they have a long history of not doing very thorough Q&A before doing a release, thereby letting the user community be the guinea pigs. 🙂 Not intended as a slam; that’s just what has happened and is verifiable with a look at the support history. Also, Nick has written a ton of plugins; Yoast not so many.

Nick’s right. Yoast SEO does so many things that they’ve made it hard to test their own Frankenstein. Many plugin developers don’t know how to do (or simply don’t do) regression testing, which means every time you make a change in the code, you run it through a battery of tests to make sure you didn’t break something, especially a previously-fixed bug (a regression).

Hi thenightrider… Yoast is insisting that this is as issue with QuickShare.

You can see my exchange with their support here: https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/2883#issuecomment-135422180

But here’s the last few conversations between me and the support rep, Rarst:

    Rarst,

Do you have any suggestions? Rarst is saying that its Nick’s programming that’s causing this problem.

All I’m asking for is that Nick can maybe see if he can work *with* them to get to the bottom of this issue. QuickShare is such a *great* plugin. But my clients *have* to use Yoast. I’m hoping that Nick and Yoast can work together. Me? I’m not blaming Nick at all. I think Nick is great and I think his plugin is great. I’m betting that this is still a Yoast issue. But seeing as how they are claiming that it’s not their issue, I am hoping that Nick can contact them and see if they can work together to get this fixed.

@pagan11460, sorry, I don’t know what else to do, but there are a number of other plugins that, combined, do what Yoast SEO does. Because it does so much and breaks so often, it’s on my list to dump and replace with several plugins that together do what it does. It already duplicates functions of other plugins (including the Open Graph Meta Tags as mentioned above). There are separate XML sitemap plugins, separate other things as well. I haven’t finished my conversion, because Yoast had fixed their issues. I knew it was only a matter of time, because they’re so infamous for landing us in bugville. Sorry, but Yoast did it to themselves. We have sites to run and can’t afford breakage all the time.

It’s much easier to isolate issues in plugins AND themes when the kitchen sink is not included in a single plugin. That’s the source of the current movement toward getting rid of plugin bloat within themes.

Final point. Never update anything on a live site without first checking for breakage on a test or staging site.

Hi again… I know enough not to update on a live site… but I’m using WP Engine for hosting and I use the Headway theme. So… even though I can use a testing area/staging site for my sites because that’s included with WP Engine’s hosting, unfortunately, Headway doesn’t play nicely with it… yet. They say that they’re working on a fix. So… for now… I make a backup, make my upgrades, and test, test, test. If it doesn’t work, I can go back to the old version with the click of a button. So it’s not a matter of updating and then it doesn’t work. The two sites where QuickShare and Yoast conflict are not “officially” launched yet… and even when they are, if I have to… I can delete one of the plugins… I’d just rather see Nick and the support team at Yoast try to figure out whose plugin needs work because I really want to be able to use both plugins. Headway has a lot of bulk… another fix has been promised and is on its way… but it’s not here yet and I need QuickShare cuz it’s so nice and light. I expect that it is Yoast’s issue because Nick’s plugin hasn’t needed to be updated in ages. And Nick’s plugin played nicely with Yoast until just recently. But I’d still like to see Nick try to work with them… even if his involvement is to proof them wrong and show them that it’s their plugin that’s causing the problem.
